Dr. Mary Beth Hauptle - Dental Hygiene studies in 1972 led Dr. Mary Beth Hauptle to know faculty members who worked a major air disaster in Chicago’s O’Hare airport and ever since she has been an avid fan of the forensic sciences. Graduating from Loyola University School of Dentistry in 1984, Dr. Hauptle became formally involved in the field of Forensic Odontology in March of 1991; courses in Forensic Odontology and Forensic Anthropology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology opened her eyes wider into the mysteries of forensic science. Dr. Hauptle became a member of the American Society of Forensic Odontology in 1993, and rose in membership ranks to Fellow in the American Academy of Forensic Sciences in 2008. She delights in annual training as a member of the Georgia Mass Disaster Dental Go Team. A practicing dentist for years in Illinois and Connecticut, she moved to Alaska and in addition to private practice, Dr. Hauptle served as consultant forensic dentist to the State Medical Examiner in Alaska from 1994 to 1996. In 1996, Dr. Hauptle moved to Atlanta, Georgia and limited her dental practice to Forensic Odontology while choosing a second career path in medicolegal death investigation. Today she wears two hats serving the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office as a Board Certified Medicolegal Death Investigator and on a case-per-case basis, Forensic Odontologist. Additionally, Dr. Hauptle is an appointed Forensic Odontologist to the State of Georgia Medical Examiner’s Office wherein since 1999, she routinely consults on cases warranting forensic dental identification and bears expert witness testimony in court in service to the State of Georgia’s 159 counties.
